what do I do?
30 years ago I left RMIT with a Diploma of Interior Design. I enrolled in this Course as I wanted to be a Furniture Designer. From Furniture Designer I moved to Exhibition Designer, to Retail designer, to Co-Retail Strategist, to Brand Designer, to Retail Building Designer / documentor, to Project Manager, to Development Manager, to Property Developer, while always enjoying painting, sculpture and always with a bias for good responsible environmental outcomes.
Rationale Retail Solutions, my design company has been in business for over 20 years, working with some of Australasia’s largest (and smallest) retailers!
PM… for some clients after I design a solution, I Project Management to complete the delivery. From an interior retail solution to a new Truck & Bus Dealership, I ensure a project is delivered on time and on budget!
DM…coming from my own development experience where I provide the Development Management process, of identifying the land, the financials to get the numbers to stack, buying the land, appointing and managing the agents, lawyers, consultants and the builders, I get to handover the completed investment to clients and sometimes to myself!
My own stuff, sometimes I like to create an asset that provides re-occurring income!
Art and sculptor, time is always in short supply, but I enjoy playing and creating on a more personal level.

who have I worked with?
“Working firstly as my consultant in the mid 90s when we were establishing the Officeworks business - and later as my collaborator / partner on a number of my own retail consulting gigs, Ian has never let me down. Ian is very interested in the science behind the strategy and getting this right before even thinking about the design. Which is how it needs to be. So many retailers "want a design done" How dumb! They're lucky Ian will challenge them and take them through a proper process first. I love watching him challenge retailers (always in a good way) to get them thinking laterally; outside their groove."
Rod Williams – Director of Push Retail, Former National Store Development Manager, Officeworks & Bunnnings
“I have known Ian for 10 years. Initially as GM of Mitre 10, I contracted Rationale (Ian) to design Mitre 10’s large format retail platform. From Ian’s first class work we rolled out this format across Australia. Mitre 10 continues to use concepts designed by Rationale. More recently I’ve been involved in some of Ian’s development projects. Ian is a talented property developer with a good financial brain.”
David Eager – Director of RetailDetail, Former Mitre 10 General Manager
“I have known and worked with Ian for over twenty years. He has been both project partner and client on numerous branding projects, large and small. Ian is solutions driven, pragmatic and displays an unwavering commitment to achieving the best possible outcomes for all stakeholders. He always value adds with his wealth of knowledge and experience in the retail and built environments.”
George Arvantis – Director of GMA Design
“My first collaboration with Ian was in the early 1990’s in his role as Officeworks Design Consultant whilst in my role I was their new Site Negotiation Agent and together we successfully negotiated, designed and leased the first 5-6 Officeworks in Victoria.
Subsequently, Ian acted for me as Designer and Project Manager for a successful Officeworks development in Traralgon, July, 2001.
Ian and I have since co-developed a number commercial projects very successfully. There again Ian was Project Manager and Designer. In all cases he proved to be an exceptionally able partner, very honest and trustworthy. On occasions wherever we struck an issue, Ian was always quick to carefully analyse all options and usually found a solution to any problem smoothly and efficiently.”
Peter Gill, Former Director of Gill Property & Associated Companies
